Tweet Tweet: Keep Up With Happenings in World of Sports

Allie Rooney ’16

The sports world has greatly benefited from the rise of Twitter. It allows for people to follow games and matches and receive almost instantaneous news about sporting events, instead of waiting for articles to be posted several hours later.

In addition, fans can follow their favorite athletes on Twitter, but will grow tired waiting around for a follow back, seeing as how the top athletes have millions of followers. Of the top 10 athletes with the most followers on Twitter, seven of them are professional soccer players. Christiano Ronaldo takes the cake with almost 32 million followers. Italian midfielder Kaká is next with 22 million followers. Next comes American basketball star LeBron James with about 17 million followers. Neymar Júnior, Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Wayne Rooney, Andrés Iniesta, and Gerard Piqué, all of whom are international soccer players, come next on the list, respectively, with between 10 and 11 million followers. The list is finished off by American basketball players Shaquille O’Neil and Kevin Durant with about 9 million followers a piece.
